Essential Costa Rica Travel Tips

Almost everyone who visits Costa Rica claims that it’s one of their favourite places in the world. It’s not difficult to understand why people say this: there are an endless amount of things to do, stunning beaches, gorgeous wildlife, delicious food, and friendly people. Spending time on one of their beautiful beaches will literally make you feel as if you’re in paradise, and you can try your hand at sports like surfing or diving if you get bored.

Although Costa Rica can be a bit touristy at times, that doesn’t make it any less great – plus, if you look carefully you can easily find some nice quiet places to relax. If you’re set on travelling to this wonderful place, let’s take a look at some essential travel tips:

Costa Rica

Average Costs

  • Hostel dorm beds will usually cost you anything between $6-$13 per day. For a private room in a hostel you’ll pay around $25. For a hotel you’ll pay around $40, and the prices go up from there.

  • Typical meals in Costa Rica can cost you around $5, so fairly cheap. If you want a really nice meal in a tourist area you’ll pay up to $20. If you want to eat cheaply you should eat from the street vendors for as little as 50 cents.

  • Transportation is fairly cheap here, depending on how long your journey is you’ll pay no more than $10.

  • Students usually get discounts on activities, but entrance to national parks is usually $10 otherwise.

Saving Money

  • If you don’t mind travelling in the ‘rainy season’, prices will be cheaper and the beaches will be less crowded. This is late April through November.

  • If you eat at something call the ‘sodas’, you’ll usually get a meal for $2 including a drink. A ‘soda’ is a small family run restaurant, and they offer great value for money.

  • You can keep your accommodation costs low by camping and renting a tent for $5 per night. A lot of resorts and hostels will allow you to do this.

  • The Caribbean side of Costa Rica will let you see the beautiful country without charging you the high prices.

  • If you find a Musmanni (a bakery found all over Costa Rica), then eat there to help keep your costs down.

  • Local buses are much slower than tourist buses, but you’ll only pay half the fare. If you have a lot of time, take one of these buses.

  • Costa Rica all inclusive vacation packages will help you to keep costs down on food, drink, and accommodation.

Activities Not to Be Missed

  • Tortuguero National Park is a breeding ground for the endangered green turtle. If you can visit at night you’ll spot them laying their eggs on the beach!

  • San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica, and definitely worth a visit for the museums.

  • La Paz Waterfall Gardens include an aviary, hummingbird garden, butterfly garden, reptiles, and more!

You definitely shouldn’t miss out on a trip to Costa Rica – everyone should visit and experience the exciting culture, wildlife, and people at least once!
