Tips for Single Mothers

One of the trickiest feats for a single mom is making it through the morning routine looking fresh, clean and prepared. Some things you can’t avoid – colds will come, alarm clocks will fail, and kids do wake up cranky. But, if you’re prepared, handling mishaps is much easier. Let’s look at some ways you can get a grip on your mornings before they get a grip on you.

Keep Closets Clean

From baby’s closet to the coat closet and all in between, cleanliness is vital to organized routines. I like to sort our clothes by type (casual/work clothes) and then colors. When I lay out my clothing the night before, it’s simple to pull together a coordinated outfit. Do the same for each child. Live with a “no clutter allowed” closet policy.

Get Out of Your Hair Rut

Many of us were teens in “big hair” days when curling irons and poofy hair was the style. Honey, things have changed and you need to run – not walk – to the nearest hair salon. Ask the stylist for a look that is up-to-date and works with your natural hair assets. Styling products are better than ever and can dramatically enhance your looks. For example, I use a wax that has “memory” so every time I comb my hair it “remembers” how to lay, even one or two days after initial styling. Much better than spending an hour with a cranky curling iron and a bottle of heavy spray.

Maintain Clothing Regularly

Hate to do laundry? Well, join the crowd. It gets worse if you ignore it until the weekend. The last thing you need is to be locked in your house chained to the washing machine on Saturday. Do one load every night right before dinner. Gather the kids in to the living room before bed and everyone can fold and put away together. Great way to teach responsibility. Even a toddler can match socks.

Staying organized is the best way to buy yourself time and sanity. Implement these habits into your routine and watch your mornings be transformed.
