Tips for a Smooth Move-in Day

Moving day typically means plenty of excitement, but plenty of work as well. Whether you’re moving into a new rental home or taking the next step on the property ladder, it’s important to make sure you’re well prepared for the big day.

Tips for a Smooth Move-in Day

Here, we look at four ways to ensure your move runs as smoothly as possible.

Get the help in

You never know how much stuff you actually own until you come to move it all. You might have looked at your current property and thought you’ll be fine sorting things out yourself when it comes to packing up, but that’s often not the case.

When it comes to getting all your stuff together, don’t be afraid to get help wherever you can find it. Usually that’ll come in the form of family and friends first, but you always hire extra help where needed. When it comes to getting all your stuff together, don’t be afraid to get help wherever you can find it. Usually that’ll come in the form of family and friends first, but you always hire extra help where needed. For many people, it will often be a good decision to hire one of the professional moving companies in your area and get their help. They will handle all the hard work letting you sit back and relax. It might cost a little extra money, but if you need a proper moving van or truck to fit everything in, or help with your white goods and furniture, it’ll almost certainly be worth it.

Be ready to go the night before

If you’re a bit last minute when it comes to organisation, try and make an exception with your moving preparations. You should be ready to go, at latest, by the night before. If you let your packing extend into (or even worse start) on moving day, you’ll likely find yourself biting off more than you can chew to get everything done.

Bear in mind, particularly if you’re in a rental property, that moving dates are very time sensitive. If you’re not careful, you’ll have the landlord, and maybe even the new tenants, knocking on the door to ask what’s going on.

Have your essentials ready to go

If you’ve got a lot of stuff, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to fully unpack on moving day, or even within the next few days. While you’re living out of boxes, you’ll want to have your essentials on hand,so you live a relatively normal life until you’ve got everything unpacked and back to normal.

You’ll want to create a “last load crate” – a box featuring all your everyday items that you’ll need instant access to having completed the move. This will help keep things ticking over while you deal with the rest of the switch.

Clean up after yourself

Not only is it generally good manners to leave something the way you found it, but where a rental agreement is concerned, you’ll have a security deposit dependent on the final condition of the property as well.

Making sure the property is neat and tidy once you’ve finished packing can seem like unwanted extra admin, but you’ll need the place spic and span to maximise your return amount. If you can’t be bothered or don’t have the time, get a cleaner in to do the job for you. It might cost you £30 but could pay dividends when your deposit comes through.

Just remember when it comes to moving, the more help you can get and preparations you can make, the better.
