10 Tips to Organize Your Garage

An organized garage can make a difference in your home and your life! Here are 10 great ways to get your garage in shape:

1. Rather than using cardboard boxes, try clear plastic totes. Plastic totes are more durable than cardboard. Plus, if you can see what’s inside of the boxes, you’re already one step ahead of the game. You’ll save time and space, as many plastic totes can be easily stacked.

2. When storing your holiday decor, label each container and keep items arranged by category. For example, store lights in a separate box from ornaments. This will make it easy to find what you’re looking for when you’re ready to decorate again.

3. Use hanging hooks on the walls of your garage to store tools, implements, and even bikes! This frees up a lot of floor space and makes your frequently used items easy to find and access.

4. Don’t be afraid to throw things away. Or, hold a garage sale! That way, you can get rid of clutter and make a little extra money at the same time!

5. Keep like with like. For example, store garden items together, holiday items together, boxes of old clothing together, and so on. Label all storage containers if the contents aren’t easily visible.

6. If you’ve got children, store all poisonous chemicals and cleaners in a locked cabinet. If there are no little ones at home, then simply store these items on a high shelf.

7. Try a basic fishing tacklebox for tiny items. The compartments are great for storing most anything, whether it’s fishing related or not!

8. Here’s a neat way to store your sandpaper – in a three ring binder! This allows you to easily access the sandpaper you need, when you need it.

9. When storing paint cans, brush a little paint on the outside of the can so you’ll know what color is inside.

10. Once every few months, recruit your family and make a day out of cleaning the garage. By taking action at the start of each new season, you can keep your garage clean, organized and free of unnecessary clutter.
