What are Dermal Fillers?

What are Dermal Fillers and how they work?In the cosmetics industry, dermal fillers are injections used to correct wrinkles, facial lines and depressions on the skin. There are different types of dermal filler but they will all be made from various kinds of natural or synthetic materials, most commonly Hyaluronic Acid and Calcium Hydroxylapatite.

Whereas a treatment such as Botox will only concentrate on wrinkles on particular areas of the face, dermal fillers have many other cosmetic uses. These include…

  • Removing lines on the forehead
  • Softening crows feet around the eyes
  • Reducing a groove between the mouth and nose
  • Plumping up thin lips
  • Enhancing sunken cheeks

How Dermal Fillers Work?

The skin on humans is made up from two separate layers; the epidermis as the outer layer and below it the dermis. The epidermis acts as a protective guard against environmental deterioration, whilst the dermis incorporates such features as the nerves and hair follicles.

As we get older, the skin will begin to depreciate and produce the worn appearance we commonly associate with old age. This happens because the epidermis layer becomes thinner and thus provides less protection for the dermis underneath. In addition, collagen produced by the dermis also reduces, meaning that the skin’s flexibility and strength is weakened.

Understandably, many people find the idea of having plastic surgery quite scary and possibly unwarranted. But these days there are many other ways you can rejuvenate your skin without actually going under the knife. Dermal fillers are one of the most popular, nonsurgical options for solving aging skin problems and giving you a new boost of life.

In simple terms, dermal filler injections are a preventative measure against this natural ageing of the skin. They help replenish the collagen and create a tougher skin surface so that wrinkles, folds and depressions are reduced. Whilst the results are not permanent and regular treatments are required, they are one of the most widely used anti-ageing treatments

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Although there are some risks of dermal fillers and every procedure will be different, the benefits of successful treatments can outweigh the potential downsides. If a doctor or skin specialist gives you the go ahead then the advantages can be felt almost instantaneously.

Perhaps the main advantages of dermal fillers are the ease of which they can be applied. A few quick injections are all that is required with the process, allowing you to carry on with your everyday duties in a short space of time.

However, you do need to see your doctor or seek the advice of an experienced skin specialist before you decide to go ahead with the treatments. This is because there are different types of dermal fillers available and each session can be tailored to individual circumstances and skin conditions. Be warned that trying to take a short-cut with the injections or going down the cheap route can sometimes have detrimental effects.
