Thank you to CARE for sponsoring today’s post and raising awareness around girls’ education.

It’s that time of the year again! You must be busy finishing up your back-to-school checklist and getting things in order for a safe and successful term. But things are very different for about 31 million girls around the world. School is still a distant dream for them. Growing up in countries as blessed as ours, we seldom think that something as basic as education could be so elusive. But there are girl children all over the globe who have to constantly confront a number of barriers to education.

With their #hungrytolearn program, CARE is working hard to remove these barriers and make school and education a reality to every girl in the world and empowering girl child. From poverty and gender discrimination to physical barriers and early marriage, these hungry-to-learn kids are deprived of their chance to a brighter future. Meet some of these lovely kids from around the world who are hungry to learn.

Laxmi’s Barrier is Gender Discrimination

12 year old Laxmi grew up in a tiny thatched-roof hut made of dried mud in a small village in India, believing that only boys belonged in schools.

Jennifer’s Barrier is the Burden of Fetching Water for her Family

Little Jennifer from Ghana would love to go to school, but spends her morning carrying buckets of water instead.

Eulalia’s Barrier is the Absence of a School near her Home

Eulalia has to climb a mountain every day just to reach her CARE supported school everyday in Peru.

Can you imagine how it would be like if our daughters were not able to go back to school this fall? And they surely don’t have to walk more miles than millions of such kids do, to reach their schools. Check out their stories on CARE and help girls like them who are Hungry To Learn. No amount would be too small. As little as $10 makes all the difference, and $50 could pay for the an entire year’s schooling for a girl! We urge all Dot Com Women readers to give this gift of lasting change and help spread the word so more and more people can join us in this noble cause of empowering girl child through education.
