Aimee Amann Highlights Small Acts to Make a Big Difference in your Community

When it comes to volunteering, a little bit can go a long way. In the United States in 2018, the official poverty rate was 11.8%, which is roughly 38.1 million Americans living in poverty. As staggering as that number is, there is a lot that you can do to help those in need in 2020. Aimee Amann is no stranger to giving back and knows the impact that volunteering can have. With over twenty years as an industry leader in pharmaceutical marketing, Aimee Amann believes that we should all be responsible for one another, and that through these simple acts of kindness, we can unite local communities.

Aimee Amann Highlights Small Acts to Make a Big Difference in your Community

1. Volunteer at a Library

If you feel comfortable working with children, you might consider volunteering to read to them at your local library. Aimee Amann explains that most libraries have consistent reading programs, whether it is a page-turning adventure tale or a colorful picture book, these after-school programs can make a major difference to underprivileged children. Better yet, see if there are any after school tutoring opportunities with children who cannot afford it. As vulnerable communities struggle to afford mentorship and tutoring, you will be making a marked difference in their lives, potentially providing them with the guidance they need to succeed.

2. Assist at a Retirement Home

On the other end of the age spectrum are senior citizens. As many of them are living in assisted-care residences, they often feel isolated and lonely, and your presence can have a major impact on their day. Consider signing up with a retirement home and visiting anywhere from once or twice a week. This might sound like a lot of pressure but having a cup of tea or coffee with them, watching a favorite TV show together, or asking them about their life story can be a bright spot in their week.

3. Provide a Warm Meal to the Homeless

Homelessness in major U.S. cities is becoming pervasive, and there is no shortage of need. As useful as it may be to give someone experiencing homelessness your spare change, it may be even more impactful to invite them to share a warm meal. Whether it is a McDonald’s, Olive Garden, or Starbucks, an opportunity to sit down at a restaurant is rarely afforded to someone living on the streets, and this small gesture can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The homeless often feel dehumanized, and rarely, if ever, hear their names. Being able to sit down and speak with them may also provide you with a valuable experience. If this is something you do not feel comfortable with, consider giving them a gift card for a restaurant; it gives them a chance to get a warm meal, and stay out of the cold for a little while.

4. Find a Charity to Work With

Lastly, Aimee Amann suggests learning more about the charities in your local community and consider either donating clothing or non-perishable food items. Better yet, bake the frontline workers cookies with a note of gratitude, or volunteer your time directly. While the first notable charities we think of include the United Way and UNICEF, there are hundreds of smaller local organizations that are always in need of support. From homeless shelters to after school programs, you can make a major impact in the lives of those who need it.
