RECIPES FOR LIFE
A monthly column for women of purpose & passion by Irene Segal, Certified Coach & President, Just Coach It

Volume 1, February 2004:  RUNNING ON EMPTY - WHY WORK LIFE BALANCE ELUDES SO MANY SUCCESSFUL WOMEN

Most successful people, live very busy lives.  Successful women, however, not only lead busy lives but most have multiple roles and hats to juggle while trying to balance personal, family and career responsibilities.  Although women enjoy and thrive on wearing our many hats, achieving work-life balance and true personal satisfaction remains a more daunting task now than ever before.

Remember that our “woman power”, our innate ability to connect, to care, to share and to accomplish, has helped to create the current paradigm shift to a more collaborative and cooperative business model. While women are a positive economic and social force to be reckoned with, too many of us are challenged by a lingering malaise, a yearning for personal satisfaction and emotional connection that somehow eludes us.  We finish our work days tired and drained of the creativity, the energy the passion to address what WE truly want and need.  We push forward and onward on automatic pilot, neglecting an inner voice that desperately longs to be heard.   In sharing, in caring, in doing, we somehow focus so much, so strongly on achievement and responsibility for others that we lose sight our personal responsibility to live a productive and a HAPPY life.  Long term satisfaction, fulfillment and happiness cannot be accomplished without work-life balance.

How can we attain work-life balance? How can we start to listen to our inner voice?  It all starts by getting naked, getting truthful, about what we want and need.  I encourage you to get naked now, to be one with the universe and with yourself.  To listen to what you truly want and need. Reflect upon the reality that the greatest investment we can make is in ourselves, in our energy, in our creativity in our passion to nurture our soul and to develop our true purpose.  Life purpose is more than the job we do and the roles we fulfill, live purpose speaks to what we can give, share, communicate and be for ourselves and others.  Life purpose starts with taking a pause, reflecting on our own personal truth.

I encourage you to complete the exercise on the next page, and to send me your comments.  Next month’s column will reflect how we move to balance our life wheels and to proactively get naked, get clear with our truth, our desire to create a personal recipe for life that is infused with love, joy and satisfaction.

My warmest wishes for a fabulous, insightful February of personal and professional abundance and satisfaction.  Yours in service, Irene, WWW.JUSTCOACHIT.COM

THE BUSINESS OF MY LIFE  © 2004 Just Coach It

THE MOST IMPORTANT BUSINESS I OWN

We all try to be efficient, effective to manage time. What we choose to focus on in our personal or professional/business life will continue to grow, while time diminishes.  How we deal with time has more to do with focus, satisfaction and achieving the results we want than trying to manage a dwindling resource. We cannot manage time, but we can manage how we choose to spend it.  Attaining success means more than a bank balance, more than acquisition of assets.  Attaining success means creating, leading the life you want.  It means being in charge of the business of your life.

Take a look at the “wheel of life” below.  Do not try to balance it, do not do anything other than color in where you are in each area of your life.  Assume that the center of the circle is low satisfaction, and the outer edge of the circle is high satisfaction.  Take a crayon, a felt pen, a pencil and color in each area of your life.  After you have finished your wheel, take a look at whether it is road ready, or out of balance. Reflect upon what you need to do to put “the business of your life” in shape.
