Baby’s Development at the age of Ten months

Now you can distinctly find the limbs of your baby straight and her trunk parallel to the floor. Your baby has by now mastered the art of crawling thoroughly. She can also very well sit without support and walk while holding onto furniture. At times, she is able to stand without support and take a step or two without any support. She is still practicing to stand steady by herself, she will be able to use other objects for support, as well as, even climb up stairs.

As you baby gains the age of 10 months, her fingers are used by her more than ever. She is able top pick small objects with her thumb and finger, without having to rest his wrist against a robust surface. Your baby is specially intrigued by very small items and instinctively rushes for picking them up and putting in her mouth. That also is a point of caution for all mothers having a child of this age.

Your baby is now growing to be a person of her own mind. She readily protests whenever she is put into her push chair or car seat. Her personality is consistently blooming and coming to the fore in concrete terms. You may now distinctly discover the nature of your baby, which may be outgoing or reserved. You may find your baby really amicable with people – whether familiar or otherwise. On the other hand, you could find out that your baby does not like unknown faces and feels shy or reserved as soon as confronted with strangers or newer situations.

Your little baby may still exhibit fear for things that formerly used to bother or scare him, reasonably or otherwise. When you find your child still frightful of certain events, like whistle of a pressure cooker, or doorbell et al, it is advisable to comfort your child and reassure her that you are there and she is safe.

Though her language comprehension has already begun, now she is gaining understanding of many simple words and phrases. It is important to keep talking to her to giver her speech patterns a good head start. The trick is to keep repeating her words back to her using adult language, like for “mummum” may be gently reinforced into adult language by putting up “Do you wish to drink water?” Abhorring baby talk will help the baby get exposed to the right set of words only. As an exercise, you may try putting up as if you actually understand the nonsense she may be speaking to you. You can reply back to her in an affirmative tone and language like “Oh, really? How interesting!” And you may just notice some words or gestures you actually understand soon after. She may even point at the object of reference to compliment the conversation.

Generally reserved (at loss of words) or a chatterbox by nature, you are advised to keep talking to your little ten months old, even if it involves giving her a blow-by-blow account of whatever chore you are attending at the moment. Like you may be cutting vegetables, or folding laundry or reading newspaper or changing her wet nappy, engaging in descriptive language of the activity going on shall render her with a better understanding of language you speak. Besides, singing rhymes to her is a cool and effective method to keep your baby learning constructively. Singing her rhymes may also prove to be her favorite past time, as she may start clapping as soon as she starts making connections between what you are speaking and what she likes to listen to. She may also say “Mama” and “Papa”, though indiscriminately, whenever either of you enters the room.

At last but never the least, it is important to note that the descriptions of a ten month old given above are potential developments of the stage. A child may or may not exhibit achievement of these cognitive milestones at the definite age, as each child has a unique pace of growth.
