Girl Power: Here’s Why More Women Are Taking Up Golf

A lot of people assume that golf is a sport that is only enjoyed by men. In some parts of the world, this might be true, but, for the most part, golf is a sport that is open to anyone regardless of gender, age or even if they are able-bodied or not.

Golf is actually a sport that is rising in popularity with women. The first woman to have played in a PGA Tour event was Babe Didrikson Zaharias back in 1938 (“Babe” really is her first name, in case you were wondering!) and she went on to form the Ladies PGA.

Girl Power: Here's Why More Women Are Taking Up Golf

These days, with female golfing superstars such as Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis and Paula Creamer often in the media, this gives rise to the number of women that want to play golf either for recreation or for because they wish to aspire to be pro golfers.

Here is an insight into some of the main reasons why more women than ever look to start playing golf:

It’s good for business

It’s no secret that golf and business are two worlds that often collide together on a regular basis, and according to a news article by the San Diego Union-Tribune back in November 2013, the Southern California Golf Association determined from a survey of 150,000 members that women take up golf because it helps their professional lives.

It’s a great way to socialise

When you play contact sports such as football, for example, you don’t get a chance to socialise “in play” because you are spending your time running around after a ball. But because of the leisurely nature of golf, there is ample opportunity to socialise with other people that you are playing golf with.

It’s a well-known fact that many women forge new friendships (and even relationships) with other people simply because they play golf with them!

It’s a fun activity for all the family

Some people have the misconception that golf is a sport that is only enjoyed by men or fathers and their kids, but the truth is golf is a sport that everyone can enjoy – including women! Golf is a great way to strengthen ties between mothers and their offspring, as it gives them the opportunity to spend time together in a neutral location rather than being stuck at home.

Lady learners are welcome on golf courses

Obviously no-one started out becoming a professional golfer, as they would have had to take lessons and spend lots of time practising their swings.

Female golf beginners are welcome at golf courses around the world just as much as male ones are, and such participation is welcomed and actively encouraged by golf associations around the world, especially those with a set of Titleist irons!

It’s a sport that promotes fitness and exercise

With some sports such as darts, for example, you don’t do much in the way of physical movements but with golf, you spend a lot of time working on your arm and leg muscles due to the nature of the game (i.e. hitting and walking). As you age, you might want to start thinking of the benefits golf will have on your body, and your mind. It takes a lot of focus, but also, isn’t too intense of a sport, like hockey or football.
