How to Overcome the Inevitable Challenges of Moving House

You wearily pry one eye open and then the other, as sunlight slants through your bedroom window and a bird outside beats a steady tattoo on your window with its beak. What on earth is it trying to do? Break in? Suddenly your third glass of celebratory ‘moving house wine’ from last night doesn’t seem like such a good idea any more. Your head hurts more than just a little bit, but guess what? You don’t get to lie in bed all day because shortly two burly men in girdles are coming to move your bed out from underneath you. Why? It’s moving day.

How to Overcome the Inevitable Challenges of Moving House

Moving house is enough of a challenge (the struggle is real – what with finding reputable removalist companies like Move on Removals and sorting out your comestibles) without having to manage the problems of packing your precious items with a mild hangover. And while we can’t stop you from overindulging on the vino tinto in your eagerness to toast your new abode – we can help you to overcome some of the inevitable challenges that come with moving house. So let’s take a look and see if we can’t help you better manage the house move next time it comes around!

Challenge One – Packing your whole home up

Does this seem like a challenge? Guess what – it is. Wait on – don’t lose all hope just yet. While packing up your whole home is a challenge, it doesn’t mean that it has to be challenging. What do we mean by this? Just because something is a challenge, you can tackle it with wit and aplomb provided that you’re ready and willing to pack and have a system in place! Managing packing up your whole home takes coordination, management and planning; but when you follow the following steps, you’ll find that it gets a whole lot easier. So let’s take a look at how to manage packing up your home:

  1. Figure out what you have in your current home, and where it’s going to go in your new home. Group the items and products in your current home so that when you pack them up, they’re ready to unload in their new spots.
  2. Keep a spreadsheet with what you have packed and what boxes things are going into. Use a numbering system for the boxes to ensure extra points of awesomeness (and ease of use).
  3. When packing and unpacking, be ruthless with the things that you are throwing away. Don’t keep anything that’s unnecessary or not beautiful in your home.
  4. Channel your inner Martha Stewart and clean, clean, clean! When you think things are clean enough, guess what? THEY’RE NOT. Keep going.

Challenge Two – Keeping your cool

It doesn’t matter who you are, when you’re moving house things can get a little bit frantic. You want to make sure you are staying calm and collected. That way, the people around you are going to get the roll-on effect of your super-zen outlook and the whole job will get done faster. A super easy way to chill out is to take three deep breaths in and out, and to sit quietly while you’re doing this. When we breathe, it takes the focus off our fast-beating hearts and makes it easier to relax as our bodies are flooded with oxygen-rich blood.

Challenge Three –  Working out where to put everything

Something key about moving house is that you need to figure out a new spot for all of your well-loved items. Figuring out where to arrange your items is key – and perhaps you might like to consult some design blogs or magazines to get the hot tips on where to put everything. Remember – it’s not that hard provided you’re prepared.

No matter what you do, remember to keep your cool with some nice deep breaths, to source inspo from design blogs to figure out where to put everything, and to be organised with spreadsheets when you’re figuring out what boxes things are in.
