10 Things You Must Do Before You Move

Moving can be a stressful experience as you attempt to get everything sorted in time for the big day, so it’s nice to have a handy checklist to tick off to ensure you’re ready to go and hey – here’s one created just for you!

10 Things You Must Do Before You Move

  1. Change your address

Numerous places and items require notification of your new address, so it’s best to get these forms filled and phone calls made before the big day. Here’s a quick list of who needs to know:

  • Your place of work
  • The DVLA (your driving license and V5 need amending)
  • Your bank
  • Car and home insurance companies
  • Energy suppliers
  • TV license company
  • Broadband and TV
  1. Have a clear out

There’s no better time than when moving home to get your things in order and have a good old fashioned clear out. Sell some items at a car boot sale to make a little extra cash that could go towards a pair of new curtains in your new place or some scatter cushions for the sofa.

  1. Defrost the freezer

You’ll thank yourself later when you do this at least a week before your moving day.

  1. Get a quote from several removal companies

You need to be armed with a fair few quotes before you settle with one removal company, as well as checking around and getting some recommendations from friends and family.

  1. Clean your house

Whether you’re selling your home or moving out of rented accommodation you need to ensure it is clean before you go. You can either get the scrubbing brush out or hire an outside service to come in and do the work for you. It’s recommended when moving out of a rented property that you ensure everything is as you found it. Molly Maid end of tenancy cleaning is a great service to consider undertakingand ensures the property is cleaned to a high standard.

  1. Book time off work around the moving day

You need plenty of time to organise that big day and to actually make your move, so it’s a good idea to book the main moving day off and perhaps the day before to relieve yourself of some stress.

  1. Cancel any subscription delivery services

If you have any subscription boxes delivered or are still a traditionalist when it comes to milk, then it’s best to cancel these services before you move to ensure they reach the right address later down the line.

  1. Amend your details on the electoral roll

It’s important your details on the electoral roll are correct, so contact your local council to amend these to ensure they are in date.

  1. Check your insurance covers your move and new home

Insurance companies are very good at finding loopholes, so ensure you double check your home cover stretches across your moving date and your new home, on the correct dates.
Be sure to amend your plan if it doesn’t.

  1. Check your council tax band

It’s a good idea to check what council band your new home falls into, so there are no nasty surprises when that bill lands in that first month of living there!
