Warm Up Your Living Room In Time For Winter

As the seasons shift from one to another, often we adjust the interiors of our homes to reflect this change. When the temperature outside begins to plummet, and the days seem drearier and starved of light, we find inspiration in turning our homes into a cosy nest. If you’re looking for ways to add a bit of warmth to your living room this winter, read on for some thought-provoking tips.

Warm Up Your Living Room In Time For Winter

Add layers and texture

Your living room will need to be a warmer place come winter time, and one of the best ways to achieve this is to add layers and texture to the room.

If you have wooden floors, then invest in a thick rug made from heavy textures to keep your feet toasty when you walk in the room. Consider adding soft, warm throws to any chairs that are made from cool fabrics, such as leather. Plump up your sofa with silky cushions that you can sink into. If you have summer curtains on the windows in your living room, then change them over for winter to heavier materials that will keep any drafts out.

Focus on your fireplace

Your fireplace may well have gathered dust and clutter over the summer months, so now is the time to tidy it up and allow it to take centre stage. Don’t overcrowd it with too many knick-knacks, instead opt for one or two warming candles either side of it or a fresh vase of winter blooms.

If you have created a feature wall above the fireplace, then consider giving it a makeover for the wintertime. The great thing about having a feature wall is that it is small enough to change more regularly than doing a complete room re-decorate. Opt for paint colours in rustic, earthy tones or choose wallpaper decorated in leaves or other elements of nature.

Lighting

The lighting of a room can really influence the vibe and atmosphere, so when the darker winter days set in, make sure your living room lighting is warming and inviting. Opt for spotlights, table lamps, wall lamps or lights on a dimmer switch, so you can adjust the lighting level to suit your mood. Dot candles around the room so that you can enjoy candlelight of an evening to supplement lighting and create a comforting environment.

Choice of colours

The colours that you choose to warm up your living room this winter need to be warming colours, so avoid cold blues or very light pastels which are more suited to spring and summer. Focus on rustic, earthy colours that reflect the cooler months, such as reds, browns, oranges and even golds.

You can add elements of these colours in small amounts, which can have quite a dramatic effect. For instance, you might decide to buy a red vase to place on your fireplace. You could opt for brown cushions, a plant with an orange pot, or a glass candleholder infused with gold tones. Subtle and simple additions to your living room can show that you mean business when it comes to reflecting the change in season.
