Master Bathroom Ideas

Your master bathroom is the place where you will love to relax and it pays to plan its decor or remodeling properly. Our gallery of bathrooms and helpful tips and ideas for master bathrooms will help you design and decorate a beautiful bathroom you will love to unwind.

Bathroom decorating should ultimately result in a beautiful spot in your house that you would love to spend time in. At the same time, it should also take care of basic necessities, should the need arrive for you to lend it to guests. Spacious or not, what every bathroom needs is a good bathtub or shower area, a vanity, a storage cupboard and clever designing to accommodate all your accessories.

You can experiment with new materials like pebbles, colorful tiles, hardwood floors (teak), wall decals, paint effects or polished concrete etc. Or you can go bold or soft with the use of color in striking combinations. These master bathroom pictures will inspire you with the latest trends in bathroom design.

Soft Colors to Enlarge a Small Bathroom

If your master bathroom is not that spacious, you can create the illusion of space by painting the walls in soft and muted colors.

Master Bathroom Ideas for Small Space
Beige Color in a Narrow Bathroom makes it seem larger

Narrow spaces in both these bathrooms (above and below) have been made to look comfortably large by using soft, neutral colors that reflect light. Any other color in these bathrooms would have made the actual space seem smaller that it already is. Lighter colors on the floor allow the master bathroom to look elegant and spacious. Use pale gray, powder blue or beige tiles. Another functional feature that can be added are bathroom roller blinds as they are both practical, stylish and modern at the same time.

Narrow, Small Bathroom in White Paint
White Brightens and enlarges a small space like no other color can

A clever design idea for small spaces can be seen in the narrow bathroom above. Instead of having two separate sinks (His and Hers), a long sink is built along the length of the wall with two sets of faucets to allow use for two people at the same time!

A Pop of Color

You can paint one wall of the bathroom a bright bold or you can give your bathroom a burst of color by tiling one wall in a bright color.

Blue and Brown Master Bathroom
Blue breaks the monotony of the brown wooden floor and gray walls and brightens up this master bathroom

For example, if the three walls of your bathroom are painted an off-white color, the fourth wall can be tiled with a lime or turquoise coat.

Green Gray Master Bathroom
Fresh, Bright Green makes this master bathroom cheerfully stylish contrasting the gray walls.

This gives the bathroom a right balance between space and color.

Mirrors for Vanity

Adding mirrors to your master bathroom is not really option anymore. They just have to be there. Mirrors are not only functional but they also reflects the light which makes the bathroom appear spacious. The current trend in bathroom vanities, sinks and mirrors is ‘The Bigger, the Better’.

Exit the mini mirrors of old times and enter the large mirrors and plush sinks

The strategic positioning of mirrors above the sink and on the walls creates light in the room. You can also install a beautiful stained glass in the door of your bathroom.

His and Hers Sink

Installing double sinks is not just for hotels anymore. They are the rage now. And they make a lot of sense too! Both of you are in a rush during morning hours and it would help to have two sinks and a large common mirror in ways more than to make the bathroom look stylish.

Bathroom Storage and Furniture

For bathroom storage, you have several options depending upon the space you have. You can create shelves, use baskets or get built-in furniture made according to the design of your bathroom.

The best place for items such as body wash, shampoo, loofah, towels and decorative items etc. would be somewhere near the bathtub. For items such as laundry, the best place to store them would be in a wicker basket under the sink. If you’re short on space, you can consider placing a small closet in the hallway near the bathroom to store all the extra supplies.

However, if space is not a problem, you can plan and design your own furniture and get closets custom-built for your master bathroom.

Lighting

The master bathroom requires good lighting management. At the front of the mirror, the light should be sufficient for facials, without being aggressive. For this, you can choose halogen lamps, which emit plenty of natural light.

The central lighting of the room should be sufficient for everyday tasks. Do you have a false ceiling? Take the opportunity to install recessed spotlights that illuminate the room discreetly.

Finally, mood lighting provides a relaxing atmosphere. Candles, indirect light, neon colors and even disco style lights (see the bathroom picture below) can be both decorative and pleasant.

Add drama to your bathroom experience by elevating the bathtub and building wooden steps that lead to it. Funky, blue lights built inside the steps make this bathroom anything but boring.

Lavish Bathtubs

More and more master bathrooms are featuring extravagant features which maximize the relaxing purpose of the bathroom. A lavish bathtub is the first step towards creating a luxurious bathroom if you have ample space.

Windows and Skylights

The next step to creating a luxurious master bath is to include windows or skylights if you have a clear view. A picturesque view as you soak in your bathtub, will be the ultimate in luxury. While we have mostly seen this in vacation homes since they are located in more serene locations, it can depend upon the location of your house.

Another vacation home nestled in pine forests in the north boasts of lovely, arch-shaped windows around the elegant white bathtub. A shower cabin is also an option when space is not a problem.

If you do not have a view to boast of, give yourself a little something extra special, by adding a skylight right above the bathtub. Even late night baths will become heavenly with the view of stars from your skylight.

  • Fantastic design, and I’m seeing some really clever and classy furniture for bathroom storage. I’m mostly a fan of what’s been done with the vanities. My first thought was “No, I don’t love to relax in the bathroom,” but if I had one like these, I probably would. Thanks for sharing these!
