A Guide to Paint Finishes

One of the easiest ways to change the look of your living space without spending a lot of money is to paint the walls. A new splash of color can dramatically change the feel of a room, and it can refresh your living space giving it new life. If you are thinking about repainting the living areas in your home then you should think about what type of paint finishes to use before you buy your paint.

Matte Finish Paint

The first type of paint finish that you can use on your walls is the matte finish. A matte finish doesn’t have shine because it doesn’t reflect light. This is a good option to use if you have bumpy walls, or if you are trying to cover up a crack or other imperfections in the drywall and plaster work. This is not a good option for high traffic rooms or rooms that children use. This is because matte finish paint will wash off if you try to wipe it down, and it is easier to scratch and mar than glossy finish paints are. If you decide to use a matte finish paint you should keep an extra pint of the paint on hand for touch ups.

Flat Enamel Finish Paint

The second type of paint finish that you can use is a flat enamel finish. A flat enamel has a matte finish, however, the enamel creates a more rub-resistant finish that is able to stand up to occasional cleaning. This is a great option for bathrooms. However, because of its matte finish, it is a good idea to keep a little extra paint on hand for occasional touch-ups.

Eggshell Finish

If you are looking for a paint finish that is somewhere between a flat and a glossy finish then an eggshell finish is what you are looking for. This paint finish has a finished result that has the reflective properties of an egg shell. This paint finish will stand up to occasional cleaning, however, it is not as durable as a satin or glossy finish.

Satin Finish

If you need a paint finish that will allow you to clean the surface of your wall, but you don’t want an overly glossy finish, then a satin finish paint is what you are looking for. Satin finishes are richer in texture and they have a slightly glossy finish. This type of finish is great for kids’ rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens because it will stand up to repeated cleaning.

Glossy Finish

If you are looking for a paint finish that is shiny and durable then you will want to buy a paint with a high gloss or demi-gloss finish. This type of paint finish is typically not used for walls, but it can be a great paint finish to use on cabinets, trim, and accents. It can also be used on end tables and other furnishings.
