DIY Home Security
Modern life has a lot of advantages. However, it also has a lot of
disadvantages. High crime rates are just one of the disadvantages
that modern humans have to deal with. If you want to improve the
security of your home then you have several options. First you can
hire a specialist to come in and install security cameras and
alarms. However, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then
you can install several inexpensive security devices yourself.
Storm Door Locks
One of the least expensive things that you can install to protect
your home is additional locks. If you have a screen door, or a
storm door, then you can install a lock on these doors fairly easy.
Storm door locks cost about $10 to $20, they come with all the
hardware that you need to install them, and they usually only
require drilling a few holes. This inexpensive lock can help
provide your home with a lot of extra security.
Window Locks
Windows are another point of entry into your home. Windows that
don’t lock properly are basically just an invitation to criminals
to invade your home. If you have older windows that have locks that
don’t work then you will want to either replace the locks or
replace the windows. Today there are very affordable windows
available that come pre-framed. Installation of these windows can
be as simple as nailing, or screwing them into place.
Community Watch
One of the easiest ways to increase the security of your home is to
establish a community watch program. Community watch programs
encourage neighbors to watch out for each other. If someone
suspicious is lurking around your yard then a neighbor will call
the police and inform you.
DIY Security Cameras
There have been a lot of great advancements in surveillance
equipment. Today you can buy security camera kits that provide you
with everything that you need to install a property surveillance
system yourself. In most cases you can be up and running in an hour
or two.
Chain Your Door
Secure doors are your best defense against a robbery. You have
several DIY options for securing your doorways. You can replace
your current door with a steel reinforced model, you can install a
door chain, or your can install a deadbolt lock. Most home
improvement stores will not only offer these products, but they
will also offer you instructional booklets on how to install these
things yourself.
Fencing
Fencing is another option that you have to protect your home and
family from robbers. There are a variety of fencing options from
cement blocks walls to vinyl. After your fence has been installed
you may want to add locks to gates to discourage robbers from
entering your yard, and to keep your family and property safe.
Effective gate locks can be as simple as a pad lock, or as complex
as a digital key entry port.
