Kids Room Decorating on a Game Theme
Does your child love to play games? Then this is the perfect
decorating idea for them. They will have fun helping you pick out
the decorations and when they get older and decide they want a more
grown-up decorating style the room can be easily changed.
Paint Color
Choose a light blue color to paint the room in. It will serve as
the perfect backdrop to most games and when your child wants
different decorations it will work well with most others.
Themed Decorations
Then you will want to look at local thrift stores for the game you
want to decorate with. If you can find more than one, go ahead and
get the extras, you will probably need them. Now use the game board
as inspiration for decorating. If you are decorating with games
that have winding colored trails like Candyland or Life, you can
create a colored trail by sewing different colored fabric blocks
together. Then all you do is tack it up on the wall. Mount the
actual game board in a place on the wall where it will be quickly
seen, like above the bed. Then use parts of the game as wall
decorations as well. For example if you are decorating with a
Monopoly theme put some of the play money and deeds on the wall. If
you are doing a Clue theme, enlarge some of the suspect cards and
put them on the wall.
Another place to look for decorations to put on the wall is in
scrapbooking stores. There are now many embellishments and papers
that are made to look like the actual game board or playing pieces.
Another great way to decorate in this theme is to use the pieces as
handles on furniture. For example with Clue you can use the pieces
that denote the players (the yellow, green, red, white and so on).
Just remove the handles that are already there and either glue or
tack the piece onto the furniture. This can also be done to the
handles on closet doors.
When making the bed cover and pillows look for fabric that has the
same colors as the game and try and come up with ways to tie it
into the rest of the decorations. Here are just a few ideas. With a
scrabble theme you can make the pillows look like the letter
pieces. Your child would probably love to have their pillow spell
out their name. With Candyland you can use some of the same fabric
you used to make the trail on the wall and create a quilt like
bedspread. You can also make or get pillows that are shaped like
different candies. With Life you can get a green bedspread and sew
on the word Life just as it is on the game along where the foot of
the bed would be. For Monopoly look around for fabric that has a
money print (this may take a little looking, but it is out there)
and use it as the bedspread. Remember to get some extra of whatever
fabric you choose, so that you have enough to make curtains.
Now it is time to add those small decorating touches. Decorate the
garbage can with game pieces. If the game you are using has dice in
it, get one of the large square beanbag chairs and sew dots on to
make a dice. Decorate lampshades to match the game. Use game pieces
on the ties for curtains. Get creative and have some fun, the
possibilities for this theme are endless.
