Cleaning Your Air Conditioner

Cleaning your air conditioner before the hot summer months begin can help you save money because the air conditioner will work more efficiently. Follow these simple steps to clean the unit and be on your way to a cool summer:

1. Remove the black grill so that you can see the evaporator coils.

2. Use a vacuum to remove dirt and debris. If any of the coils are bent, straighten them.

3. Make sure none of you landscaping covers the air flow. If it does trim it back.

4. Remove the front grill of the air conditioner so that you can see the condenser coils.

5. Vacuum around the coils to remove dirt or other items. Straighten any bent coils and then replace the filter and put the grill back on.

6. If the coils are extremely dirty you may want to use commercial coil cleaner. Follow the instructions given on the cleaner.

7. Check the concrete pad that the unit sits on. Use a carpenter's level to make sure it is level. If it is not it should be fixed. This will increase efficiency.

Caution: Don't use water and if using, take care that the water does not touch the motor or other internal parts.
