Christmas Tree Trimming – Tree Decorating Tips and Ideas

Now you have bought your Christmas tree and have ensured it’s proper care, it’s time for the beloved activity of your family – Trimming the Tree! Here’s a basic refresher before you start out that will keep you on track.

1. Start with the Lights

Before you start – Plug in all lights to see if they are working or any replacement bulbs are needed.

If the lights are all in proper order, you can start decorating. You can choose to string bulbs either from the top or the bottom. If you have a tree topper that lights, it will be best to start from the bottom so the female end of the cord is on top.

If you prefer to start at the top of the tree, place the first strand with the female end of the light cord at the top. This is important so you’ll have a male end to go into the light socket when you’re done.

Wrap the light cord inwards toward the trunk as well as on the outer reaches of the branches. Wind the light cord around the branches so the cord doesn’t show.

2. Next, the Garlands

Make sure all your garlands are untangled before you take them to the tree. Start hanging garlands on every perfect circle/ring of branches that you find making a swag like effect. Don’t skimp on the garlands. Some garlands that don’t give a swag-like effect and instead, look like that are wrapping around the trunk, tend to look ugly.

3. And now, the Ornaments

As much as you want to dig out all the ornaments and adorn your tree, you must restrain yourself and wait till you finish reading this. There is a proper way to hang ornaments in order to give your decorated tree a balanced look.

Start with the larger ornaments first. Place them on different branches so that they look equally spaced apart. Now fill in with the smaller ornaments. Lastly, add your special collectibles and heirloom ornaments to your tree a character of its own.

4. The Tree Topper

Add a large ornament for a Tree topper. It could be a Star or a Christmas Fairy or Angel or anything else depending upon your theme.

When done, vacuum away the pine needles from the floor. Wrap a tree skirt under the bottom of the tree and place wrapped gifts. Now plug in the lights, take a step back and admire your handiwork!
