Working the Meaning of Easter into the Festivities: returning to the religious roots of the holiday

Easter is a holiday that is filled with chocolate bunnies, egg hunts, and many other fun activities for the kids. But it’s easy to get so swept up in the commercial aspects of the holiday that we forget what it’s really about. We might be so busy getting all of these other activities for the kids that we neglect to sit down with them and explain to them why we celebrate this day and why it is so special. But it’s important to incorporate some activities that focus on the death and resurrection of Christ so they can carry the true meaning of Easter with them always!

Start celebrating the true meaning of Easter the night before by making Easter cookies. As you make the cookies, explain how each part of the cookies is part of the Easter story. Here are the ingredients for the cookies and how to make them while telling the story.

Easter Cookies

After Easter breakfast and the cookies have been eaten, sit down as a family and read the story of Easter together from the Bible. You can refer to the cookies as you are reading the story to help children understand. Encourage your children to ask questions about the story and if you don’t know the answers, try to find them together as a family, whether it be from The Bible, online, or by using other resources.

There are many other Easter religions such as Passover and Lent that your child may be interested in. Even if these are not the religions or customs of your family, you can explain to your child what religion they are and explain to them the reason why they are celebrated. This is a wonderful way to not only remind yourself and your child of the true meaning of Easter but also to introduce them to new customs and cultures.
