What to Get Your Mom for Her Birthday or Mother’s Day

If your mother’s birthday is fast approaching and you’re not sure what to give her, there are many choices that will make most moms happy. Largely, the choice depends upon her needs and personality. Great gift ideas for mom abound, though there are some gift ideas for mom that you should try to avoid completely.

Great Gift Idea: Gift cards

Not all moms love the idea of gift cards while others greatly prefer them to anything else. The best option when choosing to give your mom a gift card is to choose a specialty store or service that only she can use. Don’t pick an all-purpose gift card that she may end up spending on the family. Instead, pick her favorite boutique or buy her a gift card for a spa package.

Not-So-Great Gift Idea: Coupons

Store bought or hand made coupons offering a week of dish washing or a million hugs may be cute from a three-year-old, but most moms know that these coupons are last minute solutions that will never be cashed in.

Great Gift Idea: Collector’s Items

If your mom has a collection of any kind, it is thoughtful to find an item she can add to her display. It may be worthwhile to ask your mom what additions she may need, or simply to engage her in a conversation about her hobby. As you pick up cues, you will learn quickly what a good fit may be.

Not-So-Great Gift Idea: Collector’s Items

On the other hand, giving your mom a collector’s item that falls outside of her interests shows very little thought or passion. Make sure any gift you give her mirrors her likes and personality.

Great Gift Idea: Accessories

Does your mom love scarves, bags, or jewelry? Add to her wardrobe with a new piece in her favorite color. If possible, look through her closet and take notice of any items that may be showing signs of wear and replace them with an updated version.

Not-So-Great Gift Idea: Clothing

Clothing is tricky for anyone. If you purchase the wrong size, both too large or too small, you can send your mom into a depression that she does not need to experience. Even knowing her typical size can result in a mistake as clothing is not always sized correctly or she could have recently gained or lost a few pounds. It is wise to avoid this misstep altogether.

Sometimes the best idea is to simply ask your mother what she would like for her birthday. Some moms have no qualms about stating what they would like, while others prefer to be surprised. Asking your mom, even if you think you already know the answer, could offer some ideas that would make both of you very happy.
