Spam
– Interfering with your Newsletter Publication
By: Vivi Gonzalez (DCW Member)
Spam,
as rampant has it is today, has become a crucial issue for eZine
and Newsletter publishers. Due to the overload of Spam in our
mailboxes, people and companies alike have all turned to the
usage of “anti-spam” software to help them in screening out
the junk mail or Spam. The problem is that most of these
programs have difficulties in differentiating between Spam and
Newsletters that have been requested.
There are many different types of software and programs that are
being utilized in assisting the reduction of Spam in people’s
mailboxes. There are some basic groups that these programs fall
into:
1) Volume Filters
Depending on how you are choosing to send out your Newsletters,
you may come across problems with Volume Filters. This type of
filer will screen you out if you are sending email in large
quantities. It picks up on certain volume limits and if you
exceed these limits. However if you send out your Newsletters
from credible list services or via the usage of a software you
can purchase just for this cause, you should not have to worry
about Volume Filters.
2) Blacklists
There are different organizations that compile lists of IP
addresses that have been identified as Spammers, whether
correctly or incorrectly. It’s extremely difficult to get your
IP Address unlisted should you ever get on one of these lists.
Also, the definition of
Spam or Spammer differs by each blacklisting organization.
3) Content Filters
There is a list of common keywords and phrases that are
typically used in Spam. The Content Filters searches your entire
email- message header, subject line and body for these keywords,
looking to identify the email as potential spam.
These content filters are software programs developed by ISPs
and other companies in the attempt to stop Spam.
Also, people can set “Rules” in their email program that can
filter out emails by sender, keyword, and other possibilities.
There are solutions however…
Steps Which Will Help Ensure That Your Newsletter Reaches Your
Readers
1. Avoid using the word "free" in your e-mail subject
line. This is the number 1 keyword that filters look for.
2. Avoid using lots of CAPITAL LETTERS in your e-mail subject
line. This is also typically an indication of Spam and filters
look for it.
3. Avoid using exclamation points (!) your e-mail subject line.
Also another indication of Spam.
4. Don't say "This is not spam" in your e-zine. Most
filters are set to look for this phrase.
5. Disguise trigger-words from filters using carats (^) and
other symbols.
6. Address each reader personally in your message header. Set up
your newsletter so that you can personally address your
subscribers. Not only will it make your newsletter more
personable but it will help get you through the filters
7. Keep your list free of bounced email addresses. Repeatedly
sending your newsletter to undeliverable e-mail addresses can
also identify you as a spammer.
