The Best Way to Wash Your Hair

The process of washing our hair is one of the first hygiene lessons that we receive as children. However, the way that most people wash their hair is actually added to the damage that their hair is experiencing. If you are looking for a way to wash your hair that protects it from damage instead of increasing its damage then you need to follow a few simple steps.

Step 1 – Prepare Your Hair to be Washed Properly

The first thing that you need to do before you wash your hair is to brush out the tangles and knots. By brushing it before you wash your hair you are reducing the chances that you hair will break or get tangled further once it is wet. This process also distributes your natural hair oil, which will protect it from harsh soaps in your shampoo.

Step 2 – Use the Right Kind of Water

The type of water used to clean your hair can also impact how clean and healthy your hair is. Don’t use hot water to wash your hair. This will dry it out. Instead use warm water. Next, if you have highly chlorinated water then consider installing a water softener. Chlorine is very bad for your hair. Softened water also allows you to rinse more of the soap out of your hair, leaving it cleaner.

Step 3 – Use the Right Kind of Shampoos and Conditioners

You really need to use a quality shampoo and condition that is designed for the type of hair that you have. For example if you have dry hair use a shampoo for dry hair, and if you have curly hair use a shampoo designed for curly hair. Another tip regarding shampoo is that you don’t want to change your shampoos. Once you find one that you like stick with it. Changing shampoos can cause your hair to go into shock.

Step 4 – Be Gentle

Your hair is very brittle when it is wet. Because of this you should be careful not to tug, twist, or pull your hair when you are washing it. Use gentle motions and very little pressure.

Step 5 – Rinse Thoroughly

After you have shampooed make sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly. If you leave shampoo in your hair it will make your hair look greasy, unwashed, and unhealthy. It can also make you very uncomfortable.

Step 6 – Be Careful

The final step is to treat your hair carefully after you have washed your hair. You really shouldn’t brush your hair when it is wet, as this can lead to severe breakage. Instead use a comb or allow it to dry before you brush it out. This is also the time when you can add in spray in conditioners, heat protective products, anti-frizz products, or what ever other hair care products that you use.
