Six Great Ways to Re-use a Wedding Outfit

We’ve all been there. The wedding that all your old school friends are going to be at, or maybe that ex-boyfriend from a few years back. You want to make an impression, so you splash out on a special outfit. Only now that the wedding season is over, you’re starting to feel guilty that you’ve wasted money on something you’re probably never going to wear again. Well, stop worrying! There are loads of ways to re-purpose that dress and hat that are lingering in the back of your wardrobe. Here are some ideas.

Wear it to the races

One place where you can always be seen in your finest clothes is the horse races. You can also have the thrill of putting on a few well-placed bets while you are there. Going to Ladies’ Day, which is the day where prizes are given out for the best ensembles, is great fun and one brilliant way to show off that fabulous dress. The races is a perfect match for your wedding outfit because both events require you to dress in “black tie” yet the dress code for these occasions is for day time rather than the ball gowns or glitzy numbers you’d see at an evening event. If your outfit includes a hat or a fascinator, all the better! You’ll be in good company as ladies who are betting at the races are expected to wear a hat or head piece.

Book yourself a cruise

Believe it or not, many cruise ships have a “black tie” policy when it comes to evening wear. It may seem a bit old fashioned, but it’s also a bit of fun and a great opportunity for you to make believe you’re on an old cruise liner like the Titanic.

Put on your own event

Who says you need to wait for that annual black tie event to wear your gorgeous wedding outfit? You could simply plan your own formal event instead, like a cocktail party or even just a fun house party where you ask your friends to dress up. If you have your own birthday coming up it’s a great excuse to make it a black tie event – everyone loves a chance to get glammed up!

Alter it for casual wear

If your dress is in a fabric that you’re in love with, but the style is just too formal for most of the events you go to, why not take it to a dress-maker’s and have it turned into something more casual? For example, very voluminous dresses can be tapered, extra embellishments can be removed and long lengths can be shortened. Why not turn that dress into a top and a skirt, or even a jumpsuit? Or what about a lovely fabric tote bag or purse? The possibilities are endless. Just choose a picture of your chosen style and bring it along with you for reference.

Make it into home-wear

Perhaps your beautiful dress no longer fits or has gone out of fashion, meaning that turning your dress into another outfit is a no-go. Well, what about using the fabric for something else? Cushion covers, coffee table cloths and pillow cases can all be made easily with a sewing machine. Making home-wears means that lovely fabric will be seen every day, rather than lurking in the back of your wardrobe.

Keep it for future generations

How many of us wish that our mums or grandmothers had kept their fabulous clothes from the 1960s and 1970s for us to wear now? Someday your dress is going to be “vintage” and will be a little slice of fashion history. When that happens, your younger family members are going to want to marvel at it. Maybe they’ll wear it, or maybe they’ll bring it to school for show and tell. People love to have family heirlooms like this and it’s a lovely thing to do if you have enough storage in the meantime.
